Approaches to Recycling

Through its “Nissan Green Program 2016,” a midterm environmental action plan, Nissan Motor Company is working to reduce the burden of its corporate activities on the environment and achieve a coexistence of resource use and ecosystem services. This program encourages the establishment of a more efficient energy cycle and better resource utilization. For example, it prioritizes minimizing the use of newly mined natural resources and aims to increase the use of recycled materials per vehicle to 25% by 2016.

Nissan Trading is supporting this goal by leveraging the knowledge and experience gained in the recycling business; in particular, it is dedicated to recycling the scrap iron and plastic generated during automobile production. Scrap iron is melted at 1500 °C for quality governing and used to recreate auto parts such as engines and suspension systems. Scrap plastic, after the removal of foreign contaminants, is finely ground and further processed into pellets that are given new life in the manufacture of a variety of auto parts.

Thus, by recycling the scrap iron and plastic generated as “left over” for use as raw materials in manufacturing auto parts, Nissan Trading is striving to reduce waste and encouraging the use of natural resources.
